Bernie Madoff's son Mark committed suicide today. Do you think the pressure of living in his father's shadow proved to be to much for him? As parents do we put too much pressure on our kids to succeed? Are we steering them to achieve our dreams or their dreams?
I do believe the presure was too much for him. And no, I don't think we put enough pressure on our children today. I'm talking about those parents who are not rich and don't have it all. We as parents need to tell our children that they can be whatever they want/wish to be. There are plenty of positive examples out here to prove this. But, we must 1st start it from home and stop expecting everyone else to lead our children. They learn from home first how to live, what to do and not to do, how to speak, etc. So, where's the problem?
ReplyDeletePressure is around every corner in life. The problem is when parents enable children and allow them to believe that the storm will never come. God bless the child that's got his own!
ReplyDeleteIn the hood you just make lemons from the lemonade...I figured the father would have hung himself a while ago. Oh well, I was wrong.
LaLa I totally agree.. We cant depend on other people to raise our kids. Mother and fathers alike must be held accountable. We have to be realistic and realize that every kid cant be a doctor, or a lawyer, or even President. We have to recognize his/her strengths and help cultivate them as well as their weaknesses and help diminish them. As we can see the village is no longer there the way we need them.
ReplyDeleteDr.J you're absolutely right pressure is a given. The one thing we do know that is that it will either break you down or make you stronger. The funny thing is in a lot of ways those two things are on in the same. However, I can only imagine trying to live in the shadow of an infamous parent. That's definitely pressure for your ass. Unwarranted scrutiny!!

I think it's really sad because so many people blamed himfor his father's wrong doing. To feel like he had to end his own life, I can't imagine the pain he was enduring. Things could have turned around, now he will never know.

Yeah Toya do things really get that bad that you have to take your life? I guess you have to be in that space to really know..so sad SMH!!!
ReplyDeleteTrials and tribulations run deep in our veins and DNA. This world has always been a "white man's" world since the time of Socrates and even before. We are equipped to deal with failure and we get back up again! We ARE the lab rats that have been made stronger through each test since the time of slavery and we will persevere and rule one day. Just look at the WHITE HOUSE. Slow and steady wins the race.
